Why we do what we do

At Running for Premature Babies our vision is for a better chance of survival, and quality of life, for premature babies.
We:
  • supply hospitals with lifesaving neonatal equipment
  • fund research projects dedicated to advancing the care of premature babies
  • raise awareness of premature birth and celebrate all premature babies, both living and lost, and
  • inspire people to achieve their fitness goals while supporting premature babies.
Your fundraising is critical to the achievement of this vision.
Supporting communities across Australia

In Australia, 1 in 10 babies are born prematurely, which equates to 26,000 babies every year. Many of these babies require Neonatal Intensive Care, which is one of the most expensive parts of health care. Caring for a premature baby can cost anywhere between $3,500 and $10,000 per day.

Running for Premature Babies is proud to be able to support the equipment and research needs of Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) so brilliant Neonatologists and Neonatal nurses can give premature babies a better chance of survival.

Since 2007, Running for Premature Babies have raised over $6 million for life-saving equipment and research for Neonatal Units around Australia, providing over 135 pieces of equipment, and funding $800,000 of research to advance the care of premature babies for the future.
Why your race counts

1 in 10 babies are born premature in Australia. That's 26,000 a year.

Benji Castelletto, is one of the 26,000 babies born prematurely each year in Australia.

Little Benji was born at 25 weeks weighing only 550 grams. Without state-of-the-art equipment donated by Running for Premature Babies, Benji would not have survived.

So far, 9,000+ babies like Benji have benefitted from using our equipment. But with 26,000 babies born prematurely each year in Australia there is so much more work to do, and that’s why we need your help.

You can read more about other babies who have benefitted from our equipment here.

How donations will help

Neonatal Intensive Care Units need a wide range of specialist equipment to care for premature babies. The money we raise goes towards funding this equipment as well as research to make advancements in neonatal care.

Below are some examples of the difference your donation could make:

$25     Could provide a baby with jaundice access to phototherapy for 3 weeks - helping to reduce the risk of severe brain damage and other complications.

$60     Could provide a technologically advanced humidicrib for a sick or premature baby for 5 days – helping to keep the baby warm and protect them from infection and excess handling.

$200 Could provide a life-saving resuscitation cot for 20 babies – helping babies that need emergency help to take their first breath.

$500 Could provide a baby with a state-of-the-art neonatal ventilator for 7 weeks - helping babies to breathe and keep their tiny, under-developed lungs inflated.
